University of Northern Colorado

In June 2010, the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) reactivated the first (alpha) chapter of Sigma Phi Omega (SPO). We embody SPO’s ideals to promote scholarship, professionalism, friendship, and services to older persons. Our chapter seeks to recognize exemplary attainment in gerontology/aging studies and related fields. Our Gerontology program’s mission is to provide a multidisciplinary graduate education that enhances student understanding of basic and applied research on aging, application of research to practice in the field, and opportunities for professional training, while maintaining the personal connection between faculty and students that leads to deep understanding and rewarding success. The master’s degree focuses on the aging person and how he or she may navigate through later life in human development, social relationships, health, community resources, social policies, and other aspects of their lives. UNC is a comprehensive baccalaureate and specialized graduate research university. It offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, sciences, humanities, business, human sciences and education. As a Carnegie Research Intensive Institution, UNC’s graduate programs emphasize advanced scholarship and acquisition of professional abilities for career advancement, including master's degrees that complement the University's mission and purposes, and a select number of doctoral programs that emphasize scholarship, research, clinical practice, pedagogy, or performance.
