President’s Note-August 2018

August 31, 2018

Welcome back to another academic year!

We have some exciting news! Sigma Phi Omega, The International Academic Honor and Professional Society in Gerontology, is partnering with the Southern Gerontological Society (SGS) in making preparations for our spring business and awards meeting! While SGS is a regional organization which focuses on aspects and challenges of aging within the South, their membership composition has national representation and their academic journal, the Journal of Applied Gerontology, has international participation. The primary focus of SGS is to bridge research and practice in aging together and this organization places a high priority on the mentorship of students and the inclusion of older adults, throughout the year but particularly during their annual conference.

We are excited to share the SGS call for presentations: (https://southerngerontologicalsociety.org/meeting-abstracts.html). Abstracts will be accepted from now until November 12, 2018. If you are a student submitting a paper, there will be a box to check to be considered for the President’s Student Paper Award. We will then communicate with you further regarding submission requirements and deadlines.

We encourage you to submit an abstract and plan to be with us at the Sheraton Bay Point Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida from April 9 through April 13th, 2019! This is going to be a spectacular conference as SGS is celebrating their 40th anniversary and has selected a gorgeous conference venue with many student activities being organized. As always, we will recognize our award winners, introduce our board members, network, and share the latest SPO organizational updates.

Cheers!
