Loriena (Lori) Ann Yancura, PhD
Dr. Yancura is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Her responsibilities include teaching gerontology and research methods courses as well as mentoring honors and Ph.D. students through gerontology-related projects. Dr. Yancura is the President of the Gamma Omicron chapter of SPO and an active member of the UHM Center on Aging. Holding a BA in Economics with minors in History and French from Fresno State University and a PhD in Human Development from University of California at Davis, Dr. Yancura’s research program centers on exploring how family roles and culture influence mental and physical health in older adults. This program involves community–based research projects with Native Hawaiian Asian and Pacific Islander grandparents raising grandchildren and a series of life story projects with older adults. Dr. Yancura is also interested in making life story films and uses these films as a teaching tool. Yancura is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) where she serves as chair of two interest groups: Reminiscence, Life Story & Narrative: Research and Practice and Grandparents Raining Grandchildren (co-chair).
