Kelly Fitzgerald, PhD, received her MS and PhD from the University of Massachusetts Boston in Gerontology. She also has a Masters in Public Administration from Georgia State
University. She received her BS in Environmental Development (School of Architecture) from Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia. Currently she lives near Zürich, Switzerland and is a member of the Center for Gerontology at WKU as a Senior Scientist and Part Time Instructor. Prior to living in Switzerland, she worked at Swansea University in Wales as the OPAN (Older People and Ageing Research and Development Network) Coordinator where she was responsible for increasing the aging research capacity in Wales.

Kelly’s most recent consulting work on age-friendly cities was with the World Health Organization in Geneva. She continues to support the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities in a voluntary role by helping cities as they apply to join the network, to link cities with other cities, and to identify ways in which cities can become more age-friendly. Along with Francis G. Caro, PhD, she recently co-edited a special issue of the Journal of Aging & Social Policy on age-friendly cities and a book about age-friendly cities that will become available Spring 2015. Kelly has served on several committees for the Gerontological Society of America, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (currently Chair of the Global Aging Committee), and the British Society of Gerontology and chaired the student sections for all three organizations. She has served as part of the student section development group for the International Association for Gerontology and Geriatrics and as Member at Large for Sigma Phi Omega.

In 2012 she was appointed as the United Nations (UN) NGO representative in Geneva, Switzerland for the International Federation on Ageing. As a UN rep, she attends and organizes meetings and events in Geneva which focus on aging issues and that are held at the UN and the World Health Organization. Currently she is the Vice-Chair of the UN NGO Committee on Ageing in Geneva.
