Student membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring or minoring in gerontology/aging studies and related fields and are in at least their second term
of enrollment. Also, to be eligible for membership in SPO:
- undergraduates must have a grade point average at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
- graduate students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Faculty, alumni, professional, and honorary memberships are also available. Please consult the SPO Bylaws for membership requirements.
To Join SPO ...
Contact your local university SPO Chapter President or university faculty SPO Sponsor for more information about joining SPO through affiliation with a local chapter. If there is not a local chapter near you, complete the membership application and mail it to the national

Students, please attach a copy of your transcript. Note the name of your university in the space provided and write “none” in the space for chapter.
Professional members, please include your degree and dates awarded as well as your employer and job title.
To Renew your SPO membership ...
To renew your annual membership dues, please submit the proper renewal fee (check made payable to “Sigma Phi Omega”) along with your renewal notice or a copy of the renewal form. Remember to include on the form your member number located on your SPO certificate.

To order SPO honor cords and medals ...
Use this honor cord and medal order form. Cords and medals are $15 each, plus shipping charges as noted on the order form. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery of honor cords and medals. If you need a RUSH order, you must instead send your order form to SPOpresident@SigmaPhiOmega.org. There will be an additional RUSH charge. After e-mailing your RUSH order, if you also need to speak with the SPO President about your RUSH order, call 336-256-1020.
SPO offices are closed over summer break and over winter holidays (December 15 through January 15). Orders should always be placed well before these breaks.
